Vejer

Vejer de la Frontera, built on a hill, is one of the most beautiful and fascinating towns in the province of Cádiz.

Sight worth seeing

From here you have a stunning panoramic view. Depending on where you are, you can enjoy the view to the inland or the view in direction to the Atlantic Ocean.

In "Vejer" the visitor can admire different buildings in the style of moorish-andalusian architecture.

Tower City wall

So the town was declared as "Historical Artistic Complex" because of its unique buildings.
The historic heritage are from the past civilizations: the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans.

After the famous "Battle of La Janda"( the area to which Vejer also belongs to) in the year 711, the Visigoths lost their power to the Moors, and Vejer was more than 500 years under control of the Muslims.

Church

Some religious architecture buildings of the past, with Renaissance and Baroque elements, are very good preserved.
Like the churches "Iglesia del Divino Pastor" (13th-18th Centuries), which stands above the city; the "Iglesia Rosario", which was built beside an old Mosque; the "Iglesia Santa Lucía", and the "Hospedería de San Francisco Convent".

white alley

While walking through the small, dreamy alleys with the white buildings, you can experience the charme of this typical Andalusian "Pueblo Blanco"(white town).

Gate View on Vejer

On the "Historic Route" of the picturesque "Old Town" you can walk through different "Gates", as e.g. the "Arco de las Monjas", and the "Monjas Concepcionistas", a Renaissance Church, 16th Century.

City wall

A Moorish heritage is also the "Judería", a so-called Jewish Quarter.

City wall

Also some towers of the city wall are still preserved, with the names "Mayorazgo", "San Juan" and "Corredera".

townhall

Some of the buildings, which are still remaining from the different epochs of that days, are close to the "Ayuntamiento" (townhall).

Promenade

The city wall, built in the 15th Century, with its size of 4 ha is a symbol of Vejer, and is also as good preserved as the 4 city gates of the city wall:

"Arco de la Segur", Puerta de la Villa", "Arco de Sancho IV", and "Puerta Cerrada".

Further worth seeing buildings are the "Palacio del Marqués de Tamarón", and the "Palacio Mayorazgo".

And not forgetting the windmills "Molinos", 19th Century, which you can see on the highest point of the town.

"Vejer" presents itself nowadays with a good infrastructure, little shops, some supermarkets, a little market hall (you can buy fruits, vegetables, fish and meat), and the health centre.

Leisure facilities:
Excursions, riding, climbing, hiking, and different types of water sports because of the nearness of the beach "Vejer-El Palmar" will offer you enough varieties.

And after an active day the "Plaza de España" with the fountain in the middle of the place (beyond the townhall) invite you for a stay.
